Connecting with Students

By Vivett Dukes & Ciji Thurman

#SafeSpaceConvos is a Twitter chat led and hosted by teacher Vivett Dukes on alternating Mondays at 8:30pm ET. By providing a forum for honest dialogue and connection, we come together to learn, grow, and co-construct solutions to pressing problems for students.

This #SafeSpaceConvos chat was co-hosted by Ciji Thurman, a fourth grade science and writing teacher at Rineyville Elementary School in Hardin County, Kentucky. There Ciji also serves as a science academic team coach.

Chat Highlights

Q1: Why is it important to take a break from learning to build relationships with students? What difference does it make?

Q2: When was the last time you took time to truly get to know your students beyond the bounds of your content area? What did you do?

Q3: How accepting are your colleagues of you deviating from the norm? Why do you think this is?

Q4: Would you be comfortable pulling yourself away from teaching content for the day and really engaging students in social and emotional learning? Why or why not?

Q5: What are some ways you get to know your students as individuals and build those relationships? What would you suggest other educators try?
