When We All Work Together: The Impact of Educational Allies

By Vivett Dukes & Leticia M. Trower

#SafeSpaceConvos is a Twitter chat led and hosted by teacher, writer, and advocate Vivett Dukes on alternating Mondays at 8:30pm ET. In a forum that encourages honest dialogue and connection, we come together to learn, grow, and co-construct solutions to pressing problems for students.

Our chat on October 7, 2019 touched on collaboration between teachers and education allies. Co-host Leticia M. Trower spent ten years as a teacher and instructional coach in public schools before transitioning to professional learning work. She has created, delivered, and managed professional learning experiences for educators nationwide in various positions with Pearson Education, WIDA, and Corwin Press. She is currently enrolled in the Diversity and Equity in Education doctoral program at the University of Illinois.

Chat Highlights

Q1: What is your role? Teachers: What do you teach? Non-teachers: What is your relationship to education? Were you a teacher in the past?

Q2: Teachers: How do you stay up to date with research, policy, and other trends happening outside the classroom? Everyone else: How do you stay up to date with current teaching practices?

Q3: As we work to ensure an excellent education for all students, what are the pros and cons of working in the classroom? What are the pros and cons of working outside the classroom?

Q4: How can those of us who are teachers and those of us who work outside the classroom best collaborate to ensure an excellent education for all students?

Q5: What are the benefits of developing strong relationships between teachers and educational advocates who work outside the classroom? In what ways do both parties benefit? How do our students benefit?
